Poker is a card game played between two or more players and involves betting on a hand. Unlike other casino games, the rules of poker vary depending on where and when the game is played, but most versions of the game share some common elements.

Before a hand begins, players must contribute an amount of money to the pot, called an ante. This bet, which is typically made by the player to the left of the dealer, can be raised or folded by other players. Once the antes have been placed, one player, as designated by the rules of the poker variant being played, is given the privilege or obligation to make the first bet. Then each player must place a bet that is at least as large as the total contribution made by the players before him.
